Master’s Degree Programme in Gender Studies

Master’s degree programme in Gender Studies provides advanced training in the field of gender studies for both Finnish and foreign students with a variety of academic backgrounds and career plans.

The programme gathers students and faculty broadly from social sciences, humanities and arts to develop innovative, intersectional and interdisciplinary ways of expanding knowledge on gender and sexuality in local, historical, cross-cultural and transnational contexts.  The degree engages wide-ranging and interdisciplinary traditions in gender studies, including gendering practices, gender equality and feminist politics, material feminisms, affects, and queer studies.

The programme addresses the latest debates, using cutting-edge research from this exciting and growing area of study. It examines central theories and approaches in the study of gender and sexuality, and explores the ways in which gender and sexuality intersect with other differences such as class, age, race, ethnicity.

The scope and extent of this programme is unique. As a joint programme cooperation in two universities, the University of Tampere and the University of Turku (and from 2018 onwards also Åbo Akademi University), it combines several special research and teaching profiles of Gender Studies. This guarantees a wide interdisciplinary expertise.

At UTA “gender and body” is one of the key research and teaching themes in the strategy of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Current research topics include gendering practices in changing society; gender, nature and environment; lesbian and queer studies; new materialism; affective inequalities in intimate relationships, and gender equality in research and innovation. The aim of the programme is to integrate students into on-going research. In addition, in UTA, a university wide network across disciplinary boundaries of gender researchers organizes regular research seminars.
