Introduction to the programme
The programme is offered jointly by three different European universities; University of Tampere, Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria. In the University of Tampere, students’ major is Social Policy or Sociology.
The programme aims in improving students’ academic credentials and enhancing their career prospects as highly qualified analysts and applied researchers in national, European and international organizations. Graduates are expected to work in the areas of welfare management and social policy development and they will be able to apply their skills in creating, developing and evaluating social programmes and projects.
The programme will provide the graduates with competence in understanding theories of social policy and welfare as well as an ability to engage in an open and critical examination of these fields. They will also gain knowledge and understanding of comparative and interdisciplinary welfare and social policy research. In addition, they will acquire skills in intercultural communication and the capability to use and accomplish research in the fields of social policy and welfare in countries representing different welfare models.
The curriculum of the programme combines contact teaching and literature examinations with on-line learning. Contact teaching takes place mainly during three two-week intensive programmes which take place in Vilnius, Lithuania; Tampere, Finland and Linz, Austria. The travel and accomodation costs of the intensive programmes are covered either by EU funding or by the university. Each university is also responsible to organise a Master’s thesis seminar for it’s students as well as a course in Scientific Writing. Rest of the teaching takes place on-line by using different methods such as on-line discussions and written tasks.
