Construction set to begin on a new experimental research hub on the Hervanta campus of Tampere University
The Sähkötalo Research Hub will bring under one roof the experimental research facilities that are already housed on the Hervanta campus and that will be relocated there from the Tampere University’s city centre campus.
The future hub will support research conducted in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences will be the main user of the laboratory complex, which will be in a new addition to the Sähkötalo building. Martti Kauranen, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, is delighted that the project has been given the green light and will provide the faculty with state-of-the-art research facilities. “The Sähkötalo Research Hub will meet the current and future requirements of our research from both a technical and a functional perspective. The facilities will open new opportunities for creating partnerships and increasing the impact and visibility of our research,” Kauranen says.
Sanna Sianoja, CEO of University Properties of Finland Ltd, is glad that the project is moving forward and will soon enter the construction phase. “Getting to this stage has taken several years of working closely together with Tampere University. President of Tampere University Keijo Hämäläinen emphasises that the project will have a substantial impact on the University’s vitality and contribute to advancing experimental research. “We are creating a whole new research environment that will provide new avenues for both inter-faculty collaborations and business-university interactions. The construction of the research hub represents a major investment in our research and teaching.”
The contractor will be SRV. “We will carry out the work to a high standard and construct adaptable facilities that will support the University’s cutting-edge research now and into the future,” says Tero Karislahti, Senior Vice President of Regional Units at SRV. “The construction of the Sähkötalo Research Hub is a technically demanding project that requires a breadth of expertise. We bring to this project our extensive experience of multiple hospital and laboratory construction projects as well as the office spaces and laboratories we have built for the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland. As several qualitative and functional goals have been set for the Sähkötalo Research Hub, we will also be able to put our experience of cooperative construction projects to good use while managing the project. The open exchange of information and effective communication between the different stakeholders will be prioritised throughout the project.”
